Humble.

In a recent post from Esther Goetz of The Dolly Mama, I came across (perhaps for the first time) the notion of designating one word as a focal point for the entire new year (though it may be changed if one sees fit.) While I’ve made my short and sweet list of resolutions for 2019, I was very inspired by this idea as it focuses less on a pass/fail system, and more on an aspiration for personal growth. The suggested process for choosing your word encourages listing and researching several words and giving careful consideration to each. While I tried to follow the prompts, only one word came to me immediately and stood out most in my mind: Humble. I’ve spent time this month thinking over the importance of this guiding word, and this is what I’ve landed on.

Some definitions I’ve found of the word included “not proud”, “modest”, and “courteously respectful”. I mostly prefer the Biblical significance of this word.

Philippians 2:3 mentions this attribute as it says to “be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.”

Romans‬ ‭12:3-5 states: “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”‬ ‭(Emphasis added.)

James 4:7 says “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

And I define ‘humble’ simply as this: more of Him, less of me.

‭‭This is one sentiment that I want to carry with me in all of life, and one of my greatest goals: to be more Christ-like and less Jess-like, and to glorify Him in all things.

  2. I am so glad you were encouraged to find this “gentle friend” to guide you in 2019! Humble is a beautiful word! It speaks of the person of Jesus, who “came down” to our level (like we do when we talk to little children) so that we could see God more clearly! It is the highest respect we can pay another!

  3. Love this post little sister. More of Jesus and less of me is hard to do but can lead to wonderful things. I think of Philippians 2:
    Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
    7 rather, he made himself nothing
    by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
    8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
    even death on a cross!
    Jesus humbled himself for our sake. But what came after that was God exalting him above all names. Wonderful to think that if we entrust ourselves to God, it may not be easy in this life but the eternal benefits are so worth it all.

  4. Powerful word for the year, and I can’t wait to see how He transforms you this year 🙂

    Last year the word was community which led to me reaching out more to others. This year, I felt the same word for a while since November of last year. This year is deliverance.

The Lord has been impressing the word “humble” on me, too, and the word “committed,” i.e. speaking of my commitment to Christ, how I spend my time, how well I listen to him throughout the day, and how much I inquire of him with regard to plans for my day. So, I am working on listening better and not being so distracted. Lately I’ve been flittering a lot between this or that thing and then hours go by and I haven’t really accomplished anything. Part of it is because I am just getting over being sick and I lack energy, and I am tired a lot, so I am moving in slow motion. Some of it is sadness over things going on in my life, too. But, I am working on staying focused better.

    1. I love that you have mentioned being a better listener to God. This is something I’ve also recently put a focus on and it can be very difficult at times! I pray you are successful in this and in your commitment to Christ, and that you recover quickly from your illness. Thank you so much for this comment!
